Felt discs, rings, and points
Woolen felt discs, rings, and points are used for
polishing, and removing scratches from the surfaces of metals, and
plastic parts, but also products made from marble, granite, and glass. They`re
produced in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, that`s why they found extensive
usage in the field of polishing and fine sanding as carriers for all
types of sanding and polishing pastes and other resources.
Compared with synthetic ones, these felt discs, rings, and points have many
advantages:
-
particles of the abrasive material are evenly distributed in
fibers of the felt material, which results in evenly polishing of the processed
surface
- sheep's wool is
between the natural fibers the most used, and most flexible
material as such
- all required edges
and the shape of the disc or point are well-preserved
throughout its lifetime
- the new, unused
disc or point has the same properties for the paste as an already-used
felt disc or point
- the ability to produce
felt discs, rings, and points within tight manufacturing tolerances
allows you to offer a precise felt shape that matches the desired profile of
the part
Woolen felt discs, rings, and points are made from 100% fine micron sheep wool (dimensions in 0.001 mm) in standard
hardnesses, which are presented in three densities: 0.50 g/cm3 = soft type,
0.60 g/ cm3 = medium hard type and 0.70 g/cm3 = hard type.
Choosing the right woolen felt disc, ring or point is crucial for
achieving the desired result, and depends on several factors, such as:
- what kind of material
will you process ?
- what is the profile of
the part will you process ?
- what is the required
level of accuracy ?
- what should be the
desired result ?
Choosing a high-quality woolen felt disc, ring, or point, the right polishing paste (read also the article: WHAT IS GOOD TO KNOW ABOUT DIAMOND PASTES), and, last but not least, using the right polishing technique, you will achieve a polished surface exactly according to the desired result. We will be happy to help you with your choice, or if you are interested in training, we will also train you, so that your polishing applications are exactly according to your expectations.
In the end, we will give you some practical tips:
- The higher hardness of the felt tool will remove more scratches from the surface, but the quality of the surface achieved will be lower than using a softer felt tool.
- Sometimes it`s also good to use special types from the so-called saturated felt material, which, thanks to saturation with a special liquid, has a slightly higher hardness, thanks to which it removes even better scratches from the surface.
- If it`s necessary for the felt tool to heat up less by polishing, try to apply less pressure and use less RPM. You can also try to use the so-called folded felt tool. For example, such kind of type is achieved with felt discs by the so-called lamellar arrangement. With changing RPM, you change the centrifugal force, which also changes the "hardness" of the felt lamellar disc. The lamellas arrangement also helps to generate less heat.
- It`s good to combine felt tools for rotary movement with felt tools for oscillating movement.
- Mini felt tools are mainly made on shanks, so when working with them, be careful that the shank doesn`t stand out of the felt anymore, which would take to significant damage to the surface. That`s why the felt bodies are often replaced.
